So…you are thinking about picking up embroidery. That’s amazing! Embroidery is such an amazing hobby to have. It’s something that you can build on for the rest of your life. I mean that.
There are so many different stitching styles that exist as well as all of the new ones being created that you could very well be learning and mastering new things for the rest of your life.
I think this is one of the best qualities that embroidery has to offer. You can never get bored of it, there are always more things to learn and perfect.
Many people have it in their heads that embroidery is an old lady hobby… like it’s a bad thing. First of all, it’s not. But even if it was, I think that the best hobbies can be looped in with old ladies. Think about it…they have been around for decades.
They’ve seen the world, gained wisdom, and if with that wisdom they decide to pick up embroidery…I’m going to trust that judgment. It must be pretty cool!
Still, that ideology is outdated and wrong. Some of the most famous people today are embroiderers. It’s a long list, and would you believe me if I told you that both Gwen Stafani AND Ryan Gosling are on it? Does this guy ever quit? He’s the hottest man alive AND he enjoys himself a good embroider session? Talk about swoon.
Embroidery itself has been around for centuries. Embroidery’s roots come from the regions of China and the near east. The earliest forms that we know of were dated all the way back to 30,000 BCE! Scientists discovered this when hand-stitched and decorated clothing was found. Isn’t that crazy? It’s a timeless art form that many of the old greats have participated in. So when you embroider it’s like crafting in a time machine.
There are many benefits that come along with it as well, other than the beautiful end result of your work. Let’s briefly discuss this:
The Benefits of Embroidery
You wouldn’t believe the kind of benefits that come from such a simple hobby. I would have never correlated these things on my own, but now that I’ve learned about them it’s very clear!
Embroidery is essentially a form of mindfulness. You are spending hours focussing on one thing very intently, just being in the moment the best you can. This act alone lowers your blood pressure and reduces your heart rate. Your anxiety even goes down as well as your depression. It’s been proven to enhance moods and is a good outlet for expression.
Physically, embroidery is great for keeping your eyes sharp. This is because you are continuously working on your hand-eye coordination. Having a hobby gives you a sense of identity, and that can also help to improve your confidence. It also improves your confidence because you are showing yourself that you are a capable human being.
You can do anything you set your mind to!
